Southeastern Louisiana University is a state-funded public university in Hammond, which is the largest city in Tangipahoa Parish, situated in the US state of Louisiana, with a population estimated at a number of more than 17 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Hammond is also the principal city of the Hammond Micropolitan Statistical Area, which contains all of Tangipahoa Parish.
Southeastern Louisiana was founded in 1925, by Linus A. Sims, as Hammond Junior College, achieving its university status in 1970, when it became known under its current name. There are approximately 15 000 students, from 43 states and 66 countries who are attending classes at the university. SELU, by which name the university is commonly called, is academically organized into 5 colleges, including 26 academic departments, through which it offers a total of 71 degree programs, from which are 4 associate degree programs, 19 are graduate degree programs and 48 are baccalaureate degree programs.
In 2005, SELU became a doctoral-granting institution, with the inauguration of a doctor of education in higher education leadership, its business program, which is one of its most highly ranked educational programs, being accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Southeastern also being the 1st institution in the state to achieve AACSB’s separate and special accreditation in accounting.
Southeastern Louisiana has 16 NCAA Division I level varsity teams, which compete in the Southland Conference, known as the Southeastern Louisiana Lions, who are perhaps best known for their achievements in football and basketball, in which they’ve experienced most of their notable achievements. The basketball team has made a 10-6 Southland Conference record, this season, getting the chance to defeat league champion Sam Houston State in the conference tournament semifinals.
